Chase Berggrun and Eric Stiefel

Editor's Note

You may read this midwinter issue with the theme "preparation" in mind. In Chase Berggrun's visionary erasures of Dracula by Bram Stoker, which will be published in the collection R E D (Birds LLC) this March, the speaker has both suffered and anticipates loss. The pieces here, each a chapter of Stoker's novel, are shown in their final form and as full, erased chapters. They describe presages, sleeplessness, and psychic torture that lay the groundwork for what's to come. Eric Stiefel's piece also shows a bereft speaker, detached "from yesterday" and preparing a dish that—never finished—is no less compelling, violent, and even tantalizing.
